CARY - Shirley E. Cleary Jr., 91, passed away peacefully on January 23, 2021, at the House of Comfort in Presque Isle. Shirley was born on March 30, 1929, the first child of Shirley and Eunice (Miller) Cleary.
Shirley enjoyed a long career in law enforcement, first as an officer with Houlton Police Department, before beginning his career with Aroostook County Sheriff's Department in 1963. He served both the Jail Administrator and Chief Deputy. Shirley was known for being fair and his knack for obtaining information when others couldn’t. Treat everyone like you want to be treated and everything will work out, was the advice he gave and lived by. Shirley retired from the Sheriff’s Department in 1991. During his retirement Shirley loved to spend time fishing, working in his saw mill and exchanging stories with his longtime friend Keith Wheeler.
Shirley is survived by his loving wife of nearly 72 years Arlene (Tidd), his three children Gerald and his significant other Loree Ross of Danforth, Connie and her husband David of Cary and Bob and his wife Gail of Houlton. Grandchildren include Alan Cleary, Daron Cleary, Joleen Cleary, Nicole Brown, Kasey Cattani, Ben Pierce, Shawn Scott and Gary Scott along with Brother In-law Francis Brewer, 12 great-grandchildren and 3 great-great grandchildren. Also a special nephew and niece Jimmy and Kim Wakeling who were always there to lend a helping hand in Shirley’s time of need.
In addition to his parents and all siblings, he was predeceased by grandson Roger, granddaughter Anita and daughters in law Beth and Teri.
